skunk tracks are much smaller than coon tracks. Possums have different tracks but closer in size to coon. Coulda just been looking for food.Do raccoons live in burrows? 4'; dia. x 2' min. depth, straight down; 2'; tracks consistent with raccoon.
Most likely you found a skunk. They have similar tracks to a raccoon and dig burrows.
Raccoons live in hollow tree dens.

At this time of the year, a racoon could be a using a den for birthing.
