racoun. How do you say raccoon in French?
Canadian French has chat sauvage (literally, ';wild cat';) for raccoon but it is gradually being displaced by the standard French raton laveur. The Canadian French word is older since the raccoon was originally a North American mammal.
Looking at the animal, it's easy to see why the first French explorers of Canada would have called it a ';wild cat.'; However, in spite of its superficial cat-like appearance it is actually a closer relative of bears, badgers, seals and walruses.
