Do raccoons live in burrows? 4'; dia. x 2' min. depth, straight down; 2'; tracks consistent with raccoon.

Tracks consistent with raccoon print found pointing into burrow opening this morning. Why would any animal choose to burrow in hard dirt when they could be living in woods just a few yards away? But if not a raccoon, what could it be?Do raccoons live in burrows? 4'; dia. x 2' min. depth, straight down; 2'; tracks consistent with raccoon.
skunk tracks are much smaller than coon tracks. Possums have different tracks but closer in size to coon. Coulda just been looking for food.Do raccoons live in burrows? 4'; dia. x 2' min. depth, straight down; 2'; tracks consistent with raccoon.
Most likely you found a skunk. They have similar tracks to a raccoon and dig burrows.

Raccoons live in hollow tree dens.
';Raccoons prefer to make their dens in hollows in standing trees but have also been known to use underground burrows';

During the day in summer, the Common Raccoon may simply sleep on top of a log, in a nest, or on a clump of vegetation...It spends most nights foraging along streams and may raid Common Muskrat houses to eat the young and to prey on rice rats nesting in the muskrat鈥檚 walls (afterward perhaps taking the house as its den).';
