Is it dangerous for my outdoor cats to hang out around possums/raccoons?

My 2 formally indoor cats now living in my backyard are visited by possums and raccoons. do these animals fight? i cant tell if they've been fighting because my cats didn't do anything to the possum drinking from their water bowl on my porch. i scare them away when i can but it might be becoming a problem. thanks for any insight or adviceIs it dangerous for my outdoor cats to hang out around possums/raccoons?
yes...its very dangerous because oppossums n raccoons can carry rabies..if your feeding your cats out side, the wild critters can smell it. and will fight for a free meal. these animals are known for being very agressive towards humans as well. so you may want to feed your cats indoors..and if the critters still come back you may want to call animal controll to trap and relocate the animals,,,i hope this helps..i'm a country girl and i grew up with these animals as pets ..trust me.. they are better left in the wild away from people..kimberryIs it dangerous for my outdoor cats to hang out around possums/raccoons?
My male cat found a possum he thought that he had the mother lode of a rat. He found out the hard way they bite and hard. The possum bit him so hard it broke his leg. I would not suggest you let your cats be around them. They are not meant to be friends and possums and raccoons can carry rabies. My cats were vaccinated but it still caused him pain. The look on his face was quite amazing but the yelp was not.
First, if you want to keep your cats around; they shouldn't live outdoors. The life expectancy for an outdoor cat is only 4-5 years as compared to 12-18 years for an indoor cat.

Opossums and raccoons carry disease. The most common disease transmitted from raccoons is rabies. Other animals outside, particularly ground squirrels, mice, rats and chipmunks carry disease ridden fleas. This list of diseases includes the Bubonic Plague (Yes, the same one that killed millions in the Middle Ages.)

This is not even to mention the other risks to your cats outside. (I have seen a full-grown cat carried off by an owl.) Of course roadkill also occurs...

The short answer is: Yes, they are dangerous.
You shouldn't let your pets hang around wild animals. They're still animals, no matter how cute they seem, so they can attack your cats the second they seem threatened or scared. The fact that they're possums/raccoons makes it even worse, because of the danger of rabies.
Raccoons are vicious and dangerous animals. I would not let cats near them.
yes they can fight....and you cat will lose!

i've seen a older very sweet cat (who did nothing more than sleep on his front porch) get his butt whooped by a coon. poor thing...all of his feet were similar to mince meat after that. i dont know how it walked around while it was healing.

you also run the risk of rabies and your cat pickng up intestinal parasites (i'm sure those creatures are pooping in your yard too)
Please don't let your cats hang out with raccoons and possums. Raccoons will kill your cats and possums will fight with your cat. The possums will leave scars on your cats. I love cats, so please take care of your cats!
no
nope never do that raccons have rabies and if they scratch or bite ur cat then they mite get rabies.

ps raccons are agressive and are territorial animals will attack anything

no sure about oppusums
YES! they will fight and they could have rabies and many other disesas that could be spread to you so please keep your kitties inside
If they're just taking a drink or doesn't fight, that's fine. If they do fight, that would be dangerous.
Raccoons are vicious, when they bite they don't let go. From what I've heard it is very painful. For a while we had some baby raccoons living near our house. We had to get them relocated because we didn't want them attacking our cats.
