Are Raccoons a problem for my Cats?

There are raccoons and opossums in my neighbor hood. Are they a threat to the well being of my cats? Are Raccoons a problem for my Cats?
They sure can be. First of all, quite a number of raccoons carry rabies. They tend to be more aggressive and reactive than possums. If your cat or cats are outdoor cats, make sure you have them vaccinated. Although I will tell you this. I have seen what a raccoon can do to a cat with its long, extremely sharp claws. It, the cat was ripped from tail to head on its side. It later died of infection, the wound was so large and untreatable when discovered that nothing could be done.

If you can and have these other animals around, where your cats frequent, make them indoor cats. Especially if they are kittens. Good Luck. Are Raccoons a problem for my Cats?
Thank you Burns. Do not think I only care for my pet Sonia, a cat, I also care for the poor animals of the wild, God knows how much they suffer, and what we have usurped from them. But your wards are your pets, so guard them well out of possible harm's way. A small beginning, yet one made! G.

Please excuse me, Chantol. For a moment I recognized you as Burns. I make such a blunder often, whether in virtuality or in the actual world.

Have a pleasant day, and Thanks, again.

absolutely they can kill a cat in nothing flat. keep your pet indoors, raccoons can be especially vicious and deadly, they've been known to kill bloodhounds and rottweilers.

raccoons are cute only from a distance.
We have both, the possums are fine. Raccoons, on the other hand can get extremely aggressive, and many full grown ones will take a kitten as 'food' if they can, so be careful of any young cats.

I watched raccoons get more aggressive at the food bowl I have out for the strays--that started gradually, but when the cats all waited 40 feet away from the raccoon at the bowl, it was time to do something. I live trapped 18 raccoons that summer and moved them 5 miles west to the edge of town by the river so they had a water source. The adults, babies, everyone. It was for the cat's benefit and for the kid next door, who was learning disabled (a 4 year olds mind in a 12 year old body) who would think nothing of running up to one and grabbing, yelling 'Kitty!'. Since these raccoons didn't run, it was a disaster waiting to happen, so I moved all I caught. Our animal control said there hasn't been a recorded case of rabies in raccoons in our state (skunk, fox and bats yes, raccoons no at this point in time), but you know, why take the chance?

But the possums have been 'good neighbors' and don't bother anything.
We had a cat killed by a raccoon once. Raccoons are cute to look at but they kill cats and small dogs. Yes they can be friendly with humans but they are territorial.

I don't know that much about opposums, but as a wild animal, you are not going to want any domestic animal around them if you can help it.

Rabies is also a concern too, you dont want to have to deal with that. Make sure your cat has its shots too.
i would think the cat would irritate the raccoons. raccoons make better pets to have around i do know.
Make sure your cat is up on its shots, because a cat outside will get into fights with other animals they come across, especially un neutered males.
if you feed your cats outdoors, the raccoons will come for the food. Other than that, they should be ok because cats are usually smart enought to stay out of the way of a animal like that.
Raccoons are a Badger sub-species and can be very aggressive when foraging for food, especially if they have young with them. If they see your cat as competition for food, or a threat to the young, they will attack it, and probably seriosly wound or kill it. Keep your cat indoors at night and they will be fine.
Make sure the cat has all of its shots, or there will be some problems. Of Course, they love to fight other animals.
Dork. You know you can't let them near our cats.
yea
Inless you cats go outside alot, It doesnt seem a threat. Keep your cats inside; Racoons are likely to have rabies.
